The Virus: Final Part

 6. The Virus Revealed

By the fourth day, Prithvi couldn’t help thinking that the crisis might be over. Eris seemed like a part of the family, Alia chortled at her sight and Rebecca even felt comfortable enough to leave the two alone in the room at times. There was something still gnawing in Prithvi’s mind, but this time, he was not going to take any risks. He knew that Eris was not what she seemed, but in 24-hours it will not be his problem. He might even get his Lunar job after the ordeal is over.

That evening, all of them had a nice supper like a family. Alia laughed softly from her crib and Rebecca talked to Eris like speaking to an old friend. ‘You need to visit Titan’s resorts before you leave. The view there is amazing. The Saturnian rings fill the whole sky. I and Prithvi went there for our honeymoon.’

Like an intrigued tourist, Eris promised to visit it on their way back to her star system.

Prithvi controlled his impulse to ask about their civilization… he was as much afraid of offending Eris as getting a truthful answer. He couldn’t risk knowing anything that might put his family in harm’s way. He went to sleep with a comforting thought. Just a few hours and they will be gone… and my family will be left alone.

###

Prithvi woke up with a start. What time was it? Rebecca and Alia were fast asleep next to him. Outside the window, pitch-black darkness was only betrayed by dim moonshine in which he noticed the silhouette he only knew too well.

The figure loomed at the bedside. Moonlight glinted off a reflective, metal-like surface.

‘Eris, is that you?’ he called out, nervously. His one hand slowly slid under the pillow.

Rebecca woke up. ‘What’s in your hand, Eris?’. Eris didn’t respond.

Then, things happened in quick succession.

The weapon in Eris’s hand fired, Rebecca rolled over Alia offering herself instead to the lightning bolt. Rebecca’s body fell to the ground like a ragdoll. Meanwhile, Prithvi leaped towards Eris. Fired his energy gun… and a large bubble of pure energy trapped Eris and himself.

‘You killed Rebecca…’ bellowed Prithvi. ‘You monster.’

Eris calmly looked around at the bubble that the energy gun had created. She tried to poke her hand out, but the shimmering layer of pure energy repelled her.

‘You weaponized our technology,’ Eris said, looking at the bubble around her. ‘And yet we are the monsters?’

‘You killed her,’ Prithvi repeated. ‘Why?’

‘Relax. It was not lethal power; she will wake up in a few hours.’ Eris said, looking at Rebecca’s unconscious body. ‘But she didn’t know that and yet she willingly sacrificed herself to save her daughter.’

Prithvi glanced in her direction. Rebecca seemed to be breathing.

‘But WHY?’

‘For the same reason as you. We wanted to know more about your species… just as you were testing us, Prithvi. No being, however sentient, can fight the impulses evolved over millions of years. Those impulses gave Lizzies away and the same impulses told me something invaluable… something raw… something fundamental about the humans. Your daughter is no value to your species… and yet a functioning individual was ready to sacrifice her life to save her. Most interesting.’

‘”Most interesting”! Is that what you have to say for yourself?’

‘I understand you are agitated, Prithvi. Could you please remove this bubble so that we can talk freely?’

‘I won’t, Eris. You are disconnected with Ares and Adonis right now and that is my only leverage against you.’

‘Impressive.’ Eris stared at Prithvi. ‘So, you do know. ‘How did you suspect us, Prithvi? What gave us out?’

Prithvi steadied himself. She has done this for a reason. And now she knows that he knows. He took a deep breath. All cards on the table then. ‘Well, at first I didn’t suspect anything. When you first got down from your spacecraft, I was as mesmerized by you as the rest of the world. You looked and behaved like Gods.’

Eris nodded. ‘It is always better to don the appearance of the species we approach. It makes our job a lot easier. Our real form is quite different. Anyway, please continue.’

‘At first, I had no doubts about the nature of your being. However, when I saw Adonis stumble on the carpet in the grand ballroom, that was when the alarm bells started ringing in my mind.’

‘You figured it out from that? How?’

‘I didn’t exactly figure it out then, but that was my first clue. There was something off... something non-humanlike in how differently you and Ares’s reacted. Remember what exactly happened there? Adonis had stumbled on the carpet and Ares impulsively tried to help him.’

‘So?’

‘Well, what was off was your response to the stumble. You didn’t even look at Adonis, not even a glance or a flinch. For a human, or a human-like species, there should have been a certain reflex response, but there was none from you. That was when I started thinking about it and then a possible explanation occurred to me. I formed a hypothesis. It was a very tenuous link, but I wanted to test it nevertheless.’

‘First, I hired an actor to talk to all three of you… with three different identities.’

‘Ah, so that’s what it was. I admit. It did confound us greatly.’

‘And I did notice it on the tapes. You did try to pretend that you were meeting Anthony Hopkins for the first time, but your face betrayed you for that one fleeting moment. As you said, no being can fight the impulses evolved over millions of years.’

‘And then you knew?’

‘Well, almost.’ Prithvi continued. ‘But I needed more direct evidence to be sure. I then set-up an accident at the HEO facility. It was a risky move because in case I was wrong, I was endangering an all-powerful alien guest. But I was right. When the metal debris fell towards you, only Adonis had the direct line of sight. And yet, you sidestepped it, just at the right second. It was too coordinated to be a coincidence. It was much, much more than that.’

There was an impregnated silence for a while. Prithvi looked intently at Eris expecting her to speak, but she waited patiently. She wanted him to spell it out. Well, So be it.

‘My hypothesis was correct, all three of you share the same consciousness.’

A grave smile appeared on her face. That was the acknowledgment he needed.

‘And I am willing to bet, that by extension, your entire species shares the same consciousness. You are either a Hive mind or have a central consciousness, a queen bee that governs all of your actions. Whatever one of you sees, hears, or experiences gets shared with everyone else. Once I arrived at that conclusion, things began to make sense. When Adonis stumbled, you didn’t help him because your central consciousness, like the human nervous system, directed Ares to help him. Same way when a human’s two hands won’t both reach out to scratch an itch at the same time.’

‘Very well done, Prithvi.’ Eris finally said. ‘One forgettable stumble gave away the biggest secret of our species. We do have a central consciousness, which you can call the Mind. Having the Mind was necessary for our evolution. Unlike humans, for us each action of every individual contributes to making the whole better. All our pleasure and all our pain are shared across the entire consciousness. In other words, entire species works as a whole… an ultimate form of cooperative evolution if you will.’

‘At the cost of your individuality. Tell me something Eris, are you not feeling disoriented right now?’

‘Yes.’

‘And if I removed the bubble, your central consciousness would find out everything that you witnessed?’

‘Yes.’

‘And that would be bad for humans?’

‘I can’t be sure as this brain’s logical prowess is quite limited without the connection to the Mind. But as far as I can tell, yes, Mind may perceive you to be a big risk.’

After a long silence, Prithvi said tentatively. ‘I have an offer for you Eris… and I mean Eris the individual and not the Mind.’

‘Within this bubble, you are talking to the individual named Eris.’

‘If other humans found out the truth about you, they will freak out. We are afraid of what we don’t understand. And we only have one way of dealing with what we fear. Violence -- even when it is guaranteed to fail against the advanced Lizzies -- would be the first response. And we will use the only weapon that is known to work against you. Imagine large energy-ships firing energy bubbles on the Lizzy flotilla. It would be a war, humanity will assuredly lose, but a war nonetheless.’

‘Are you threatening us, Prithvi?’

‘No… actually quite the opposite. Your true nature is a secret that only I am privy to, no other human knows that. On the other hand, you, Eris, are the only individual of your species who is aware that your secret has been discovered by humans. Moreover, only you know that we have developed your technology that can be used against you.’

Eris went into a thoughtful glance. ‘You are right, Prithvi. So, what do you propose?’

‘We both know things about each other’s species which can lead to an interstellar war. We can avoid this future. Both of us are expendable for our species, for very different reasons. There is only one to prevent that unnecessary bloodshed— we would need to die together inside this energy bubble tonight.’

Eris smiled. ‘Your species never ceases to surprise me. I know you are proposing this to protect your family more than saving your species. From the limited foresight, I do see how that is the only logical option. I agree to your proposal, Prithvi, for your sake. After all, you have been a good host.’

‘How do I know that you are not lying?’

‘You don’t… the same way I wouldn’t know if you are honest.’

‘I have to be. I know that with your tech, we don’t stand a chance against you. By taking myself out of the equation, I am making sure that Lizzies don’t have to destroy humanity. By agreeing to die with your secret, I am doing my species a favor.’

‘Logical. Then so be it. Whatever both of know needs to die with us for the betterment of both of our species and to avoid the war.’

Prithvi trusted her. There was no other option, anyway. He looked over at Rebecca again, she was still unconscious but her breathing showed a regular pattern. Alia was still sound asleep. Prithvi gave a long affectionate look.

‘How do you want to end it Prithvi?’ asked Eris, in a dispassionate tone. She might have been asking for a coffee.

‘Well nothing sanguinary,’ Prithvi said sitting down on the floor. ‘Carbon-dioxide levels will continue to rise in the bubble. We will feel nausea and eventually we will pass out as our blood depletes its oxygen. It will be a painless death. We may have about an hour.’

Eris followed the lead a sat down. ‘I may not even hold for that long without the Mind. I trust you will hold your end of the bargain if I die before you.’

‘I will,’ Prithvi replied, truthfully. ‘We as well may hasten the process by talking. I had a few more questions, not that it will serve any purpose more than to satiate my curiosity.’

‘Go ahead.’

‘What was your real purpose behind this visit?’

‘Let me start from the top. In our tongue, our species is called Xhalgaks and our home star-system is near the center of the Milky way. Our star revolves around the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. Due to the proximity to the black-hole and high concentration of star clusters made our evolution take a different path than most other civilizations. In order to survive the harsh conditions on our planets, we developed a centralized consciousness. Evolution needed species-wide cooperation as a critical precondition for the survival of our kind. Sacrifices of many were needed so that a few could carry our genes. This allowed for an exponential evolution, and now, our species has expanded to hundreds of star systems and thousands of planets in the galaxy. We will soon be intergalactic, and our expeditions are already on their way to the Andromeda Galaxy.’

‘Then why were you here?’

‘Well, yours is not the first alien species we contacted. As we explored the vast expanse of the galaxy, we started discovering more and more alien civilizations. You know, the Galaxy is brimming with all kinds of life-forms and consciousness—from silicon-based life that lives in the coldest of the places to fiery monsters feeding off star’s corona. There is a whole spectrum of wildlife out there that is outside the realms of your imagination.’

Eris paused to inhale deeply. Reducing oxygen levels were clearly taking hold. She pressed on. ‘However, there is very fundamental classification that defines the core dynamic of every species. We discovered that species can either be ‘Cooperative’ or ‘Competitive’ in nature. A Cooperative civilization, much like the Xhalgaks will make decisions basis the whole species. On the other hand, in a competitive civilization, individuals look after themselves first.

‘We met and analyzed hundreds of civilizations, and we figured that competitive civilizations were selfish and self-destructive. In rare cases when they made it to the space-age, they were a grave danger to the other peaceful cooperative civilizations.

‘These competitive and invariably violent civilizations needed to be culled out. Much like you weed out unwanted  growth from the healthy crops. We keep an eye out for any species that are on the verge of  interstellar travel. We contact them, earn their trust, and assess them for their behavior. We followed the same protocol for you. Past few days, we were assessing humans on our scale.’

‘And…?’

‘You are one of the most competitive and violent species that we have ever met. It is surprising that you have made it this far, technologically speaking. You should have gone extinct from this in-fighting long ago. Two of our species are at the opposite spectrum of our cooperative-competitive scale. Whatever you do to each other is absolutely revolting to Xhalgaks.

‘In other words, Humans are an extremely dangerous virus. You destroy the planets you live on and move onto the next, and it allowed to replicate, you’d end up destroying not only yourself but other planets and civilizations across the galaxy. Mind determined you to be a galactic virus and gave us our orders.’

‘Orders to what?’

‘Annihilate you. Our rocket contains an anti-matter bomb and we started our sequence three days ago. Whatever I said about Xhalgaks’ custom of spending a few days with you was true though. We record as much detail as possible about the species before exterminating them. I planned to spend time with you, collecting the last few bits of knowledge about human culture and family structure for the Mind library, while Adonis and Eres triggered the bomb. Humans would have been extinct by now, if not for a curious encounter.’

Prithvi’s furrowed his brows as a realization dawned on him.

‘Alia.’

‘Yes.’

‘What does she have to do with all of this?’

‘Alia proved to be the antithesis of everything we know. I just told you that we are the most cooperative species in the Universe. Each specimen of our species contributes to the whole and in turn, all our pleasures and pain are shared. The Mind decides whatever helps our species as a whole even if that means sacrificing a few. And that we thought was the most extreme form of selflessness.’

‘Till you met Alia.’

‘Till we met Alia – she is of no real use for your civilization, she will never contribute to the progress of the whole, and yet, you and Rebecca would go to any lengths to protect her. A perfectly healthy individual was ready to sacrifice her life for another who is completely infirm. This was a form of selflessness that goes beyond Xhalgaks. Such a being would have been culled immediately after hatching on our planet. But on yours, you not only let them survive, but adopt them and take care of such beings.’

‘It was the most irrational selfless emotion we have seen… and we least expected to see it amongst the humans. You even have a name for it… Love.’

‘Even Mind was caught by surprise. It changed the way we see this Universe. A large chunk of resources is now being diverted to understand this emotion which had made our Cooperative & Competitive scale useless. Needless to say, Mind stopped the antimatter bomb sequence the moment I witnessed this selflessness.’

Prithvi stood dumbfounded. The energy bubbled still shimmered around them noiselessly. Eris was visibly gasping for breath. She stammered as she continued to speak.

‘Y… You know, I also felt it. P… Perhaps not as strongly as you and Rebecca do but I did feel it. When I fed Alia, she innocently hugged my hand, and I felt a shiver run down my body. All my thoughts cleared, and I just wanted to remain in that moment. Maybe that was my first brush with love.’

Eris smiled while still gasping for air… and this time it was not a goddess’s smile… it was a mother’s.

Prithvi took out the energy gun, and pressed a button. The energy bubble disappeared and both of them heaved for fresh air.

After several gulps of urgent breaths, Eris spoke. However, this time the voice was not hers. ‘You continue to surprise US, Prithvi.’

‘Am I talking to the Mind now?’

‘You are… through Eris. I am now connected to her and I know everything you talked about. It is an incredible risk you are taking by letting her connect to US.’

‘A well thought out risk, the hive-Mind. Even if Eris had died in that bubble, you would have figured out that something was wrong. You might have gone back to your decision of exterminating us. But now, Eris is alive, and you can now eliminate me to preserve your secrets.’

‘What if WE decide to exterminate your kind anyway? Did you think about that?’

‘I did. And that is why I wanted to talk to you. Humans are aggressive and competitive – but that only applies to some humans. You have known that each individual human is different, but let me tell you this – Each one is capable of love. Give us an opportunity to prove ourselves. As far as extermination goes – you can do it any time you desire. But it will never be needed. And all this while humanity’s affiliation will always be with you, our leaders and our people revere you like Gods. The only exception is me. And that problem can be solved easily.’

A laugh emanated from Eris’s mouth. ‘You are a remarkable specimen, Prithvi. WE don’t want to kill you, but after all that you know, WE can’t leave you either.’

‘What do you mean?’

‘You have to come to our star and help US. Your individual mind is of so much value to our collective.’

It was Prithvi’s turn to be surprised. He sat in a thoughtful silence. ‘It is better than dying.’

‘WE will take that as a yes. Thank you for your sacrifice, Prithvi. WE will make sure that your species remembers you. And WE do have a small gift for you. WE are sure you will appreciate it.’

With that Eris’s voice became normal. She was back at her smiling self.

Rebecca was just waking up and so was Alia. Eris walked to Alia’s bed and whispered something in her ear. As Rebecca and Prithvi watched, Alia put her feet on the floor and cautiously began to walk on her own.

Tears rolled from Rebecca’s eyes and Prithvi embraced them in a tight hug.

‘Are you ready for your voyage Prithvi? We must leave immediately,’ said Eris.

Prithvi glimpsed a faint hint of moisture in the corner of her eyes, but it might have been his imagination.

Prithvi nodded. Lizzies had done so much for the humans and it was time to pay back the debt. The galactic virus had an 80,000-light-year journey to the center of the galaxy to teach aliens about love.

The Virus: Part 5

 5. An Alien Next Door

Prithvi sat numbly at the back of the Presidential Limo making way to his home, flanked by the whole motorcade of police vehicles. A few helicopters flew ahead for a recce. He looked out of the dark tinted window towards the pavement that was lined up with flashing cameras. He tried to talk to the driver, but he didn’t respond and instead raised the partition. He was already a pariah.

He didn’t care much about what would happen to him. But what about Rebecca and Alia? He should have turned down Estella when he had a choice. She played him on his hopes to see Alia walk again and he fell right into the trap. And now he has not just put his family but the whole of humanity in an unknown danger.

Prithvi stepped out, the neighborhood was as empty as on the red curfew. But by no means unmonitored, he thought uncomfortably. Surely, there is an entire battalion stationed just outside the safe radius.

‘She is already in,’ said the stout secret service agent posted outside his home. ‘You are on your own now, we have been asked not to interfere.’

Perhaps for the last time, Prithvi entered his home.

She was there, sitting on the living room sofa, looking radiant as ever. Her countenance showed no trace of any ill will. Rebecca sat next to her, fidgeting with her hand nervously. Her disheveled face and unkempt hair stood in complete contrast with their unwelcome guest.

‘Good morning, Prithvi,’ said Eris, benevolently.

‘Good morning, madame Eris. I hope you were well hosted.’

A smile stretched on her godly face. ‘Most pleasantly, Prithvi. Rebecca is an excellent host. Would you like to sit?’

Prithvi sat next to Rebecca and held her hand to comfort her. She kept shifting her gaze nervously between Eris and the bedroom.

‘I apologize if I am making it inconvenient for you or your family, Prithvi. Unfortunately, this is our custom. We are supposed to spend some time with local families to learn about local culture and families. Just a few days and we will be departing from your planet. Don’t mind me at all, consider me as part of the family.’

Prithvi’s first instinct was to bring up Lizzies’ arm-twisting of the Earthian government. He composed himself. It was an offer to be gracious in a coerced situation. Better to suck it up and play along. Moreover, any escalation might put his family into more trouble.

‘It is an honor of a lifetime to host you madame Eris. We were just concerned if we would be able to serve you at par with your stature.’

‘Oh, please, Prithvi.’ Eris chuckled. For a moment Prithvi saw her dropping her guard. She might as well be a long-time friend visiting the town. Only if Prithvi didn’t know for what she really was. ‘I was getting tired of fancy hotels and pretentious ball-rooms. I am feeling pleasantly at home already.’

‘Please do make yourself comfortable madame Eris. We will make your arrangements in the guest room.’

‘Thank you,’ Eris said. ‘Just one more question. Is there anyone else in this house?’

Her suggestive tone indicated that she had already known, however, politeness took precedence.

Rebecca responded, ‘Our daughter Alia, she is sleeping in the bedroom right now. She is five… well almost six years old.’

‘Oh, how wonderful. I would love to meet her,’ Eris said, cheerfully.

Rebecca was smiling by now. Even Prithvi found himself giving in to the false normalcy of the situation. He reminded himself forcefully. She is an alien. And she is not what she looks like.

###

The next day, Prithvi and Rebecca introduced Alia to Eris. From her bed, Alia blinked as she looked at Eris and a thin smile stretched on her round face. She lifted her tiny hands and, with an uninhibited affection that only a child can express, put her fingers on Eris’ face. Eris, surprised at first, reciprocated by cuddling her hand.

‘What has happened to her?’ Eris asked once they were out of the Alia’s room. ‘Why is she different than other humans?’

Prithvi took a moment to absorb the question. For all this time that Lizzies were on Earth, they had never met a sick person. Earthians were busy parading the best of themselves --actors, scientists, powerful men and women--but never the infirm. Alia, to Eris, was an entirely different kind of human being who was imperfect and weak.

Rebecca’s expression changed. She replied, plaintively, ‘She was born with a rare condition; her heart is too weak to be able to pump enough blood to her brain and body.’

‘Her motor functions are not developed, and she can’t walk or do other normal things.’

‘Will she ever get better?’

Prithvi shook his head. ‘We don’t know.’

Rebecca jumped to her child’s defense. ‘It doesn’t matter to us. She is an angel and we are so lucky to have her.’

Eris seemed puzzled. ‘But will she be of any value in human terms when she grows up?’

Prithvi was surprised, but he had been in the alien company enough to sense the innocent curiosity behind the seeming insensitiveness. Rebecca, on the other hand, recoiled and a stream of tears rolled off from her eyes. Prithvi jumped to her side and consoled her. ‘I am sorry madame Eris. Rebecca is very protective of Alia.’

Eris gave a confused nod, apologized, and left for her room.

###

The incident changed a few things. Eris became much more interested in Alia. She made sure she was in Alia’s room as much as Rebecca tolerated. She watched intently whenever Rebecca fed Alia her liquid meal, or administered her medication, or even cleaned her bodily excretions.  Eris did ask a few questions here and there but remained conscious of her words and tone, especially with Rebecca.

Rebecca also grew accustomed to having Eris around, even enjoying addressing what seemed like childlike inquiries from her. (What is the function of a teddy bear?)

On the third day, as Prithvi prepared the bedpan for Alia, Eris asked politely if she could do the job. Hesitantly, Prithvi stepped back. He watched intently as Eris took care of Alia silently without any signs of revulsion.

On the same day, the alien spaceship ceased leaking a tremendous amount of energy.

The Virus: Part 4

 4. Failed Gambit

The next event was the inauguration of HEO, High Energy Observatory which no doubt was made possible with the Lizzy Technology. It allowed for deep space observations and communications with the Lizzies. Lasers powered by micro-fusion could emit 60-petawatt beams, pointed in the correct direction, could communicate across the cosmos.

Prithvi couldn’t care less about the observatory; he stared at the three Lizzies through his dark glasses walking alongside them to the inaugural area. While one scientist was trying really hard to impress the Lizzies, Prithvi caught Eris looking back at him. For a brief moment, it felt as if her gaze was burning him from the inside.

Does she know? The thought crossed over his mind. He as quickly shrugged it off, as the formal ceremonies took over.

After the inauguration, Marsh D’Mello, the Chief Contact Officer, played a tour guide and led the rest of the contingent. The facility was indeed impressive expanding several blocks. Moving from section to section, Marsh D’Mello animatedly described the purpose of different instrumentation to the alien guests, who, as always, made appropriate remarks at the right times.

‘On your left, you can see the tower called ‘Absolute Zero’, here we cool down the gases near absolute zero where it transforms into Bose-Einstein condensate – WATCHOUT—‘

A loose piece of metal came off and brushed Eris, it was sheer luck as the heavy block crashed the spot she stood a second ago.

The tour was cut short and several apologies followed including the one directly from the President. Soon all was forgotten, nobody suspecting any foul play. Who would deliberately try hurting the benevolent Gods?

###

The Next morning, Prithvi was woken up by a violent and screaming vid call from Estella.

‘Where the heck are you?’

‘What do you think, Chief, my duty doesn’t start until… what time is it?’

‘He doesn’t know,’ Estella said to someone off-screen. In the background, a large screen was delivering the morning news.

‘Haul your ass as fast as you can to my office, use the back door, and don’t talk to the press till you see me.’

Estella hanged the phone before he could mutter, ‘What press?’

Prithvi stood dumbfounded, holding the receiver. What had transpired in the morning? There was no time to think. He dressed as fast as he could and rushed out of the house. That’s when he understood what Estella meant. Reporters and cameras swarmed him the moment he stepped out of his apartment. Dozens of overlapping voices bombarded questions, several cameras jostled for space around him.

‘Why do you think you were chosen?’

‘What is your family’s reaction to all this?’

‘What arrangements have you made?’

His resistance didn’t deter them. He managed to wade through them to reach his car and pressed the ‘privacy’ button. The glasses turned dark and the outside noises reduced to a muffle. He took some deep breaths. They didn’t help. He could think of only one reason why he was the center of the attention -- His little side-project with Estella had gotten out in the open.

With trembling hands, he turned on the car’s vidscreen. A news feed came to life:

‘ – the unusual choice of hitherto unknown security officer Prithvi has surprised many Lizzy experts. We have with us Dr. Dave Lock from the Institute of Interplanetary Sociology, Luna, who will throw more light on this new demand from the Lizzies.’

‘Dr. Dave, what do think of this unusual request from the Lizzies and why do you think Officer Prithvi was chosen?’

Dr. Dave adjusted his glasses and spoke in a deep monotone academic voice.

“Well, thanks for having me this morning. I think this is another aspect of inter-species cultural exchange. This cross-pollination of cultural ideas is what would make two distinct life-forms understand each other better.”

“Some skeptics are comparing it to native-habitat observations that we do on animals. How do you respond to that?”

“That is completely uncalled for after what they have done for us. This is as much an opportunity for us to get to know them as for them to know us.”

“And what about this Officer Prithvi?”

“Ummm… that is a curious choice I must admit. My hypothesis is that they wanted a normal everyday family but also someone who had been around them for a while and gotten used to them.”

“And as our analysis reveals, this officer was alongside the Lizzies as part of the security--”

Prithvi closed the vidscreen, his heart pounding and his mind racing.

###

It was a matter of rare exception where the President had to wait for someone. This was one of the rarest ones. As Prithvi entered Estella’s office, President was pacing across the length of the room. The moment he saw Prithvi, he pounced on him.

‘What exactly did you do?’

‘I… just… I didn’t do anything.’

‘He knows, Prithvi.’ Estella said.

‘Damn yes, we do. But too late. Only after Eris asked to move into your house, we started going through the security footage. Whatever weird shit you were planning with Anthony Jenkins; we saw that… and I think Lizzies got a whiff of that.’

Estella jumped. ‘We weren’t planning anything, Mr. President. We just wanted to know more about them. Those were my orders, and he didn’t have any say in the matter.’

Prithvi and Estella exchanged looks. Prithvi’s silently moved his lips. ‘Thank You’.

‘Doesn’t matter,’ President flared. ‘Once this is over, you will both be tried for high treason.’

‘But for now, we don’t have any choice, we just have to follow through with what Lizzies are demanding. Adonis listened to our politics for an hour and abruptly stopped the talks. We tried to reason but to no avail, they were quite forceful. Adonis and Ares went to their spacecraft and Eris explicitly asked to move in with you for five days. They said they will take everything back if we didn’t allow them their request. I have never seen them behaving like this.’

Prithvi swallowed.

Suddenly Marsh D’Mello barged into the room. He looked like he had seen a ghost. ‘M… Mr. President… one moment please –’

President Belikh barked, ‘NOW WHAT?’

‘B… But Adonis… and Ares… the spaceship…’

‘Get your bearings, Marsh.’

He gulped down the glass of water from Estella’s desk. ‘S… Sorry M… Mr. President. We had been monitoring the spaceship since it arrived. Since today morning, it is leaking energy.’

‘Huh? What do you mean?’

‘It is just a leakage, and yet it is so massive that the technician reported it in Yottawatts. Our scientists swear that this much energy in a such a small space is impossible unless…’

‘Unless what?’

D’Mello swallowed. ‘Unless it is meant to be a bomb. A bomb that packs more energy than the friggin SUN.’

A silence erupted in the room. President turned to Estella and Prithvi. His hands shook and his tongue struggled to put the words together. His demeanor long gone.

‘I am putting this on you two,’ he blared. ‘Y…You guys pissed them off and they want to deal with you personally. For all I care, they can hang you in a public street as long as they leave Earth without annihilating us.’

‘But he didn’t—’ Estella tried to protest.

‘Shut up, Estella.’ President fumed. ‘No more tricks, no more games. Prithvi, my agents will escort you back to your home. Then you just do what Eris tells you to do. There will have an army contingent outside your house, and I will personally be monitoring the operation.’

‘And as for you Estella, you are terminated with immediate effect. We will see what to do with you later.’ President gestured and two guards grabbed Estella by the elbows.

‘God help us. We are not ready for this.’ President wiped his forehead, where an involuntary bead of sweat had gathered.

The Virus: Part 3

 3. Gods (?)

‘The world changed more in the last two days than it had in the past two thousand years,’ Prithvi said, overlooking the three aliens who were now making their way towards the Presidential dinner.

‘You might be right for once, champ,’ said Estella in Prithvi’s comms.

‘You can just say that you were wrong for once,’ replied Prithvi.

Estella didn’t react to that remark. ‘The whole humanity has gone apeshit euphoric. Just three of them managed to do this to 10-billion people in two days.’

Prithvi saw all of that firsthand. In those two days, the three Lizzies participated in number of public events. It became quite clear that all three of them were not only Godlike in their magnificent appearance but depth of intellect too. The effect was hypnotic and not just on laypeople. They were as deft at talking about quantum nature of the universe as they were about music and arts. They were always careful to keep within the purview of human capabilities, ‘rationed their knowledge’ as someone put it mildly.

Perhaps it was too embarrassing to tell a tired stone-rubbing-caveman about the matchbox.

Eris seemed to be the leader of the group, she always spoke first in media interviews, while Ares seemed more proficient in matters related to arts. In one live interview, she got her own cult by live-painting the exact copies of Monalisa, The Starry Night and The Last Supper, all in 30-minutes flat. Adonis was most reserved of them all and seldom spoke. He liked talking about interstellar politics but often deferred to Eris if the interviewers prodded.

Presently, Prithvi stood guard at the bottom of the stairway in the grand ballroom of the Presidential Residence.

‘You must be tired by now.’ Estella enquired.

He pressed on his earpiece. ‘Last couple of days were hectic, too many high exposure public events. But I will not lie, I loved every second of it.’ Prithvi said looking around at the grand ballroom. President had pulled all the stops at show and pomp. The select crowd -- Hollywood celebrities, rock-stars, billionaires, Nobel laureates, business magnates -- had completed the atmosphere. Expensive Tuxedos and Evening dresses filled the room. ‘Gosh, this place smells like a Chanel factory.’

‘Do I hear you complaining?’

‘Hell no. There is not a single soul on any of the planets that won’t give their right hand to exchange places with me.’

‘I thought as much. Anyway, you will have easier days from now on, there will be only closed-door discussions with the leadership --  heads up.’

The three Lizzies appeared at the first-floor balcony of the ballroom, looking majestic as always. The esteemed crowd gathered below the carpeted imperial staircase. On cue, lights were dimmed, and a spotlight focused the three aliens as they walked down on the red carpet, waving and smiling all around. Eris and Ares donned shimmering gowns while Adonis wore a suit. The colors of their seemed to gradually change every few minutes.

As three of them came down the stairway, holding hands, Adonis stumbled on a wrinkle in the red carpet. A collective ‘ooh’ echoed in the hall, but Adonis quickly recovered with some help from Ares, while Eris continued to smile and wave. Soon, the minor gaffe was forgotten, as the three Lizzies mingled with the people in their separate clusters of attention.

Prithvi watched the incident with interest. ‘Did you see that Estella?’

‘See what? The stumble?’

‘Yes. Noticed anything peculiar?’

‘No. Is there something I should know?’

‘It is probably nothing, but I have a hypothesis that I need to confirm. Arrange for my replacement.’

Prithvi moved around the grand-hall, away from the Lizzies who were now surrounded by three layers of celebrities.  In one corner, Prithvi spotted a familiar face sitting at the bar counter, sipping his drink. Prithvi took the next spot and grabbed a beer for himself.

‘Mr. Anthony Jenkins,’ said Prithvi loudly. ‘Congratulations on your recent Oscar, fourth one I presume.’

‘Fifth.’ Anthony downed a glass without paying any attention to Prithvi. ‘No autographs please, I am not in the mood.’ Anthony said throwing a glance in the direction of the Lizzies.

‘I understand, Mr. Jenkins. These are just crazy times, right?’

‘Bonkers. Look at that crowd.’

‘Are you not going to meet them? Lizzies, I mean.’

Anthony’s face contoured as if in physical pain. ‘Not like these pedestrians. I am the Anthony Jenkins, I deserve a more exclusive access.’

‘You are right, Mr. Jenkins. Art is as important as politics… but these politicians don’t get that.’

Anthony nodded in a agreement, loosened his bow and motioned the bartender for another drink. Prithvi moved his stool closer to Anthony.

‘I think we both can help each other,’ Prithvi said. ‘I can get you up close with all three of them… with dedicated time. Imagine how would a photo of you look on H-Town’s cover page, with Eris and Ares.’

For the first time, Anthony looked properly at Prithvi. ‘Can you do that?’

‘I can. But you’ll have to do something in return.’

‘How about a million credits right now?’

‘Not money, Anthony, something else. Come here.’ Prithvi leaned in and whispered in his ear. ‘You will have to do as I say. You will have act like a different person to for each one of them.’

‘Who are you?’

‘I am a part of Lizzies security. Consider this as a small prank I want to play on them.’

Anthony thought for a second.

‘Just imagine how much your PR team can do with pictures of you meeting with the Lizzies.’

‘Alright what the heck. I am not sure what is the point of all this but if you guarantee those photos then I am in. How about if I use my movie characters?’

‘That sounds good Mr. Anthony. This will be bigger than your four Oscars, I promise.’

‘Five.’

Prithvi had to pull some strings, but shortly after, Anthony was being escorted by the security and meeting with the Lizzies. Prithvi stationed himself in the monitoring room and watched as Anthony pulled off his magnificent performances of a Russian politician for Eris, a European business mogul for Adonis and an American innovator for Ares, all in the same evening.

Later that night, as Prithvi watched and re-watched the tapes of those meetings, his mind exploded with revelations. Lizzies were not what they looked like.

The Virus: Part 2

 2. The First Contact

Nobody knew how and when Lizzies’ spacecraft entered the solar system. An unambiguous communication announced their precise location followed by a polite request to land on earth. When earthly tracking systems located the spaceship near Saturn, it was already moving at 30% the speed of light. 100,000 kilometers per second. A spacecraft like that, if launched from the Earth, could escape the solar system within a day. A feat that required more than a decade for even the fastest rockets of the day.

Another significant factor was the sheer size of the thing. Initial observations estimated the long axis of the Lizzy spaceship to be more than a kilometer long. The troubling conclusion, as the Chief Scientific Officer pointed out, that either the Lizzies were 20 ft giants, or the ship was carrying thousands of them, like a generation ship.

Next three hours were the longest in humanity’s collective history.

Prithvi watched the spectacle from the front row of the newly constructed International Spaceport. The arrival terminal was completely packed with Earth’s most prominent citizens.

‘Move that cameraman away from the VIP area,’ Estella blurted through the earpiece on a common communication channel. A security personnel promptly stepped out and moved an over-enthusiastic reporter.

President Baelikh and the First Lady sat next to the arrival gate, along with the Chief Contact Officer who frequently whispered in President’s ear. Prithvi along with the rest of inner-security detail stood just behind them.

‘Is that Marsh D’Mello?’

‘Yep. President just nominated him as the Chief Contact Officer. A reward for him for being the ass-licker that he is.’

‘Are you telling me that D’Mello is going to be the one managing interstellar relationships with a highly advanced alien civilization? Armageddon is here.’

‘It’s all politics… let it go. Just focus on the job at hand. Do you have the gun on you?’

‘Yes, but I am not going to use it, Estella. Few days of this duty and I am off to the moon with my family.’

‘I hope you are right champ -- HEADS UP.’

He instinctively looked in the sky and noticed clouds turning red, other eyes followed. A gigantic spaceship came into the view, firing its deceleration boosters, a huge pillar of ionized blue gases leaped to the ground. The spaceship touched down like a feather on a specially constructed landing zone.

‘Messiahs have landed.’  President Baelikh mumbled to himself.

Prithvi marched alongside the armored Presidential Limo that made its way to the landing pad. Prithvi couldn’t help but get impressed by the majestic alien spaceship in front of him. The towering structure was easily the tallest thing on the planet AND it was a spaceship. That thing would make even the most advanced earth rockets look like Lego toys.

Limos stopped a few meters away from the spaceship. A huge amount of research had gone into the right protocol for the First Contact. How idiotic would it look if the human leader stood next to the alien spaceship’s garbage disposal! Lizzies had saved humans from potential embarrassment and given meticulous instructions beforehand. The directions were detailed to the point of almost embarrassing; like a mother teaching her toddler the right way to lick a lollipop.

They skipped one part, though. They didn’t reveal what they looked like.

As the President and the First Lady stood at their pre-designated places, billions of eyes unblinkingly stared at their screens. Prithvi, despite his police training, felt his heart racing as they waited for them to come out of their insanely huge spaceship. What would come out of there? A 20-feet tall repulsive slimy lizard with eyes hanging out of their sockets? A horde of tiny green creatures with forked tongues? Or something entirely inconceivable by the human mind.

But nothing prepared him for what came next.

An imperceptible door slid about 10-feet above the ground, and a staircase descended, individual footholds seemingly hovering in mid-air. And from the shadows of the spacecraft’s interior appeared three Lizzies. As the afternoon sun-light fell onto the Lizzies, a single defining word crossed the human minds:

Gods!

Many fell to their knees upon witnessing the splendid majesty with their eyes. The three ‘Lizzies’, were two women and one man of impossible perfection that could put Greek demigods to shame. Their bodies were forged in the heavens and their faces glowed with an aura and a kind gentle smile adorned their faces like a mother holding her baby for the first time. Their pearly white resplendent clothes defied any earthly origin. And it was not just their physical appearance. The moment they appeared; a soothing calm descended.

Prithvi wanted to feel angry at himself having doubted these Gods, but in their divine presence, he felt unable to do that too. When they waved gently, Prithvi fought an urge to fold his hands in prayer. He just wanted to watch them forever and ever.

As they walked down the ramp, floating down in graceful motion, a mesmerizing smile never left their faces.

One of the women stepped forward on approaching President Baelikh, her hand outstretched. A usually sanguine President fumbled on his feet and wordlessly took her hand.

‘Pleasure to meet you Mr. President. Greetings from Lizzies… I believe that’s what you call us,’ said a heavenly voice with perfect inflection and exact pauses. ‘My Earth name is Eris and these are my fellow Lizzies -- Adonis and Ares.’ She said and stared towards the cameras capturing the event.

As the images of Eris, Adonis, and Ares beamed across the solar system, another miracle occurred. A serene quietness and content that the contact group had felt, spread through humanity. The ever-evading satiation of the senses was fulfilled in the most primal way, turning them into loyal subjects. In the minds of people, centuries-old Gods were discarded in favor of the new ones. Already Lizzies had given humans so much, all that was left for them was to descend on the planet of their subjects and accept their reverence. And they did so in the most miraculous way possible.

The Virus: Part 1

 1. The Offer

NEW MESSIAHS ARRIVE TODAY’. ’Can you believe today’s headlines?’ Police chief Estella Gonzac quipped. While pacing the length of her office, she tossed the newspaper on the table.

Prithvi didn’t immediately respond. Instead, he leaned back on his chair and replied, ‘I absolutely can.’

‘I didn’t call you to join the bandwagon,’ she said staring into his eyes. She was pissed. Well, to be honest, she was always pissed.

He chuckled. ‘C’mon Estella. You know me for what, twenty years now? When did I last disappoint you?’

‘Don’t call me by my first name… at least not in my office. And no, you haven’t. And that is the reason why I cannot trust anyone else with my doubts.’

‘Alright, ‘Chief’’ Prithvi said emphasizing the honorific. ‘What do you think Lizzies are arriving for? Recon? Extermination? Enslavement?’

‘Hold your sarcasm champ. You don’t know what aliens might be thinking. What you do know is that my instincts never fail me.’

‘Well… if you suspect them of foul play then you are looking for something that doesn’t exist, Estella… I mean… chief. They gave us C-ships and micro-fusion technology just after the first contact. Your buddy, President Baelikh, though I hate that guy, did a semi-decent job of combining both the technologies. For the first time in human history, we have infinite energy in our hands. Don’t you remember how it was before? And now look at us. We have established colonies on Moon, Mars, Ganymede and Europa. Baelikh planning a Titan mission too.  All credit goes to the Lizzies. I mean we were a dying civilization and they gave it all that without--’

‘Ya ya ya,’ Estella said impatiently. ‘Gosh. I had forgotten how much I hated your expositions. Thanks for reminding me.’ Estella sniffed. ‘Whatever you said is right. But that is exactly why it doesn’t make sense to me. It is too… too… selfless… too methodical… too…’

‘Too unlike humans?’

‘Exactly.’

‘Well, they are not humans.’

‘Still… there is no free lunch in this world.’

‘Aaand… they don’t belong to this world. Just because we screw each other up all the time, doesn’t mean that Lizzies do too. Maybe they are wired differently than us.’

‘And for me THAT is an even a bigger reason why to not trust someone who is that different.’

Prithvi thought for a second. ‘Fair enough. Hence, we arrive at a deadlock in our argument. Neither of us have anything more substantial than our hunch. We can take them to Area 51 and analyze their brains, I suppose.’

Estella rolled her eyes, missing the sarcasm. ‘Of course, not. At least not until we understand them better. And that’s why I called you here today.’ She pulled her chair closer to Prithvi and leaned in till her face occupied Prithvi’s entire vision. ‘Listen carefully. You have one of the best minds when it comes to looking beyond the obvious. You make no assumptions and see things that others will not give a second glance. I still haven’t forgotten your work on the Italian Syndicate. That bust is now a case-study in the police academy. I want this big brain of yours doing work for me.’ Her voice turned into a whisper. ‘And more importantly, you are someone I can trust. Right?’

Prithvi shifted uneasily in his chair. It was always tricky working with Estella… and even trickier working for. On one hand he didn’t want to get into this hot mess Estella was planning, it’d be an easy ‘no’ and he could just walk out of the room. But on the other hand, secrecy about their physical appearance and almost altruistic generosity made it difficult for his curious mind to outrightly reject it. He needed to insure himself first, though.

‘You can trust me Estella. But I have two conditions before I hear it. One – I get to say ‘no’ after I hear your plan. Two – I work within my boundaries.’

‘You have my word.’

Prithvi sighed. ‘All right. What do you have in your mind?’

Estella walked with a heavy gait to the table and pulled out a piece of paper from a sheaf and extended it towards Prithvi.

‘The President has asked me to manage their security for the time they are here. I want you in the inner-most ring of their security detail. That way you will be close to them. Watch their every move, listen to every word they say… do your thing… and report it back to me.’

Estella paused and stared at Prithvi.

Prithvi looked between her and the security memo. ‘There is something else you want me to do. Only this can’t be it.’

Estella’s eyes widened and a smile stretched on her face. ‘How did you figure that?’

Prthivi handed back the memo. ‘Well, I just connected the dots.’

‘Humor me here then. How do you know there is more to the ask?’

‘Well it was not one single thing but a combination of multiple observations. First, you insisted on a private meeting. You must have deemed a vidcall sufficient risk to haul my ass all the way from New New York. I had my flags up at that time. Second, just now you emphasized on trust you have on me. I know you and you wouldn’t play that card in usual circumstances. It has to be more than a plain eavesdropping mission.’

‘Wait a sec. This one involved eavesdropping on an alien species. I could be genuinely asking for a trusting partner for Lizzies’ security.’

‘True. And I did initially attribute that to the situation. But recall what you exactly asked in the way you asked it. You had whispered, ‘You are someone I can trust.’ You were evoking trust at the personal level. As if I would be privy to something incriminating, and I would keep my mouth shut if things go south.’

‘I see.’

‘The third factor was pretty easy to see in retrospect. You closed the door shut and switched on a scrambler before this conversation began. That seemed a little awkward to me at first but makes sense with my hypothesis of an illegality in your request. You wouldn’t have done that if the task entailed merely being your eyes and ears.’

Estella laughed loudly. ‘Brilliant.’

Then, she walked to the corner of the room, pressed an invisible speck on the wall, after a quick iris scan, faux wall slid revealing a small rack. She picked up what looked like a weapon.

‘This,’ Estella held a surprisingly ordinary looking gun in her left hand, ‘is where I need you.’

‘What is it?’

‘It’s an energy-gun. It creates a bubble of pure energy around the body it is fired at. Once it is activated nothing can enter or leave that bubble. Not even pure energy. I need you to keep it on you whenever you are around the Lizzies. And if needed… use it. Don’t worry, it can’t kill.’

Prithvi’s eyes widened. ‘You weaponized their micro-fusion technology?’

‘Of course, we did. Did you think that the guy like Baelikh wouldn’t use micro-fusion beyond clean energy? Anyway, Pentagon is almost confident that this will work against the Lizzies.’

Prithvi took the gun in his hand. It didn’t feel much different from his service pistol except the nozzle that was closed and rounded at the end. In fact, it was lighter. Thanks to a fusion device, Prithvi noted with discomfort. I possess a mini sun in my hands.

‘Here is the real catch, Prithvi, this mission is ‘off-the-books’. Pentagon can’t risk an interstellar war in case you did something stupid. Hopefully, it will not come to that.’

Prithvi sat there trying to understand the full extent of what Estella was proposing. He envisioned all best-case and worst-case scenarios and everything in between. He was supposed to spy on friendly alien beings who are arriving in peace. He will be completely alone and completely expendable. If anyone found him with that gun, let alone while firing it, there will be no hearing. Inter-species relationship won’t be risked for one man.

He was clearly expendable in this scenario. In other circumstances, he might have accepted it, but with the family and responsibility of his daughter… he couldn’t risk their future on Estella’s hypothesis.

‘I am sorry, chief. This is getting too dangerous. It is one thing to penetrate the Italian syndicate but whole another thing to go for ‘off-the-books’ mission involving freaking aliens. My answer is a no.’

Prithvi stood up, kept the gun back on the table and turned to the door.

‘How is Alia doing? She must be five now, isn’t it?’

‘She is...’ Prithvi paused in his tracks. ‘same. Doctors are asking us to evaluate… you know… our final options.’

‘I feel sorry for her, Prithvi.’ Estella paused. ‘You know, we need someone to head security for the new Lunar base. And the moon’s low gravity might help her condition --’

‘I’ll do it.’
